Anglo Adventure

Travel with a sense of humor

Who is this Anglo?

Long story short: opportunity knocked. And we listened. And we traveled to the Great White North in the middle of the coldest winter there ever was.  And we bought new coats and unpacked our belongings in a 140-year-old building that makes me think of a wine cellar/creepy hotel. And we soon discovered the wonders of the two-flush toilet, ketchup chips, and the Canadian KitKat.

More about Me:

I am a professional writer who recently relocated from Seattle to Quebec City, Canada to learn French and document expat life. After a year or so there, I moved back to Seattle where I currently am. I still retain my crown as a Quebec City insider and have authored multiple guidebooks and articles on the area. Still learning French. Still traveling.

I live with ‘The Husband, Jake and a 15-pound boston terrier, Elwood. An anglo is someone whose native tongue is English. Otherwise known as the girl in the black hoodie who can’t roll her “r”s to save her life and who consistently gets the wrong sandwich at Subway because she says “oui” when she really means, “no olives.”

Stay tuned and find out:

  • If I get booted from my French for idiots anglos class
  • If I ever get to put my brand spankin’ new Canadian work permit to work
  • What’s a socialist government really like?
  • How to make your friends super jealous of your fabulous expat-ness (even when you’re having a terrible time)
  • All about French Canadian food you’ve never heard of
  • And Poutine, the one French Canadian dish you have heard of

That’s it in a peanut shell. You can contact me at halmcreative[at]gmail.com.

Update: Canada was wonderful, Quebec is my favorite country-that-isn’t a country, but things became unstable and we had to move back to Seattle. I still write about and travel to the area often. I am still also learning French. I am also now a freelance travel writer and having a blast.

  1. Oooh I LOVE Quebec City except everyone was cold because I didn’t speak French 😦 But BEAUTIFUL buildings and you are correct, the poutine is amazing. Hard to believe it’s so common it’s even a fast food item, while most American’s haven’t even heard of it 🙂

    • Poutine is so freaking good. It was too hot to have it when I was there. I also love ketchup chips.

I didn’t speak a word of French when I moved there, except for Bonjour which I pronounced like “Bonjovi”
-ha – j/k. My goal is to be bi-lingual and bicoastal. QC is amazing. J’adore!

  2. I went to Canada and came back with a Husband…we live half the year in Manitoba and the other have here in the states. QC is a whole country in and of itself, I applaud your efforts to assimilate and to eat the ketchup chips!

The thing I love most about Canada has to be the #1 highway and the vast, open, endless space….and shopper’s drug mart!

Great blog, I’m going to follow!

  3. Chi, Seattle, Quebec: you’re hitting all my happy spots! Okay, haven’t been to Quebec City yet, but I love Montreal dearly, love Chicago dearly, and love Seattle dearly since my in-laws are all there. Can’t WAIT to follow your adventures…

  4. I am a Québecoise, living in Seattle and would like to invite you to meet up with myself and 3 other Québécoises that live here as well. I attended law school at Université de Montréal and Université de Poitiers in France. I practiced law in California then here in Seattle. I am now … The dreaded expression: “stay-at-home-mom” and passionnate about traveling. Reach out!!

    • Ha – even more dreaded: “Stay at home wife, sporadically paid writer.” Would love to meet up! Need people to practice French with as well. I will be in touch, Sophie. I also met some other Quebecoises at one of my French meetups. There are a lot more here than I thought! I will reach out.

  5. I just nominated you for a Reader Appreciation Award. I’m new to this so I’m still unclear whether this is considered an honour or an annoyance. My intentions are the former.

  6. Love it! Done and Done (well…soon:).

  7. Hello, I’ve nominated you for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award. It’s a good way to show your followers blogs you find inspiring, and to have other people’s followers find you. If you don’t have time or want to accept the award, no worries. If you want accept, read this for the award rules:

  8. I stopped by to thank you for following my blog and then got caught up in your posts and the story of your travels to Canada and back and all that is following that. I’ll be back. I grew up very close to the Canadian border and have spent time in Quebec. I can’t wait to read more of your stuff.

  9. As I’m just up the I-5/99 in Vancouver, I find it very amusing that you moved to Québec City for the experiences of living in a different country (within a different country). Vancouver is only 2 to 3 hours away to be sure, but it shares much in common as we live in “Greater Cascadia.” 🙂 My high-school French-teacher made sure we learned European French, and not Québecois French, although there’s nothing quite like uttering out loud those religious-terms as curse words.

    • That is funny. I had no idea Quebec was so different than the rest of Canada. It’s not just the language, it’s culturally different from Western Canada too, in my experience.
I like both cities a lot for completely different reasons, although Quebec City will always be my favorite because I lived there.
Keep in touch, neighbor! Or should I say, neighbour!

  10. So, eh? If a person were, say, bipolar, and they, say, threatened to bore you to death, would that make them a homicidal maniac, ‘eh?

Sorry, that was the closest threaten thing I could come up. Ima just not that creative.

    Rock On!

  11. Ha! Sure you’re creative. Don’t ya know I read your blog eh? 🙂
